James Buchholz
James is an advertising and marketing professional with 30 years of experience helping businesses grow through effective media and marketing strategies.
A fifth-generation member of an eastern Iowa farm family, James has deep roots in the communities he serves and an appreciation for the people and businesses that make them strong. He spent 20 years at KWWL-TV in Waterloo, first as an Account Manager and later as Local Sales Manager, where he led a team of seven sales professionals and worked with businesses throughout the Cedar Valley and eastern Iowa.
Over the course of his career, James has watched the media landscape change dramatically. His experience spans broadcast television, streaming, digital marketing, social media, display advertising, mobile marketing, and more. That experience has given him a broad understanding of how different platforms work together and, just as importantly, when a business should or shouldn’t invest in them.
Throughout his career, James has built his approach around a simple philosophy: marketing should be easy to understand, focused on results, and built on trust. He believes businesses deserve straightforward advice about where their marketing dollars are going, why they’re being spent, and what they should expect in return. For James, that means listening first, understanding the business, and recommending what makes sense rather than simply selling what’s available.
James met Abby Turpin at KWWL in 2017 and quickly recognized that, despite their different professional backgrounds, they shared the same approach to business: work hard, communicate honestly, build strong relationships, and do what’s right. Their complementary experience in advertising, media, marketing, communications, and storytelling, along with that shared philosophy, ultimately became Good Company Strategies.
After retiring from KWWL, James saw an opportunity to put his decades of experience to work for businesses without being tied to any one media company, platform, or product. At Good Company Strategies, he helps small and mid-sized businesses understand their options, develop smart marketing strategies, and make informed decisions about where to invest their time and marketing dollars.
James leads business development, client relationships, media strategy, advertising, account management, and day-to-day operations for Good Company Strategies. His goal is to become a trusted extension of each client’s team, someone they can call with a question, an opportunity, or an idea and know they’ll get straightforward guidance.
For James, Good Company Strategies is about more than marketing. It’s about relationships, trust, and working with good people, the same values that have guided his career for three decades.

She has also created multiple new campaigns and initiatives designed to connect with different audiences and give people new ways to engage with the organization. Her strength is taking an idea from concept to execution, developing the strategy, messaging, brand, and creative approach needed to make it resonate.
Abby founded APT Communications, Marketing, and Media in 2023, working with clients across the country on marketing, communications, media, and content. Her clients have included New York City Public Schools, the University of Texas, Iowa restaurants and businesses, and GLOW, a nonprofit organization in Florida. She is now bringing that work into Good Company Strategies, expanding the focus on helping small and mid-sized businesses with experienced, practical marketing support.
Her experience spans brand and marketing strategy, public relations, media, advertising, social media, content, fundraising, events, and capital campaigns. She believes good marketing doesn’t need to be complicated. It starts with understanding who you are, who you want to reach, and what you want people to know, feel, or do.
Abby met James Buchholz while working at KWWL and saw firsthand the trust and relationships he had built throughout the Cedar Valley. Their shared belief in honesty, hard work, and doing good work with good people ultimately became Good Company Strategies.
“After 30 years in sales and advertising, I’ve learned a lot about what works, what doesn’t, and how businesses can get the most out of their marketing dollars. I’ve always enjoyed working directly with business owners, learning what makes their businesses different, and finding creative ways to help them reach more customers. Abby and I both love this community and the people who make it such a great place to live and work. That’s what makes Good Company so exciting for us. We get to bring our years of experience together to help businesses we believe in grow and succeed.”
“What I’ve always loved most about my work is getting to know people, understanding their goals, and finding ways to help them succeed. After years in media, marketing, and communications, I know how much difference the right strategy and messaging can make. Through Good Company, James and I are bringing that experience together to help businesses make smarter marketing decisions, tell their stories, and grow without spending a fortune. I love the work we’re doing and the relationships we’re building along the way.”
